Steve Matthiasson has been leading his own charge since the 1990’s when he went against the massive, oaky, flashy wines that were predominant. Matthiasson has always been a lesson in restraint and elegance. 2020 was at risk for smoke taint from the California fires, Matthiasson chose to pick the vineyards earlier than they ever had, the result is high toned red fruits, incredible acid and structure. The oak is handled in a way similar to Barolo, 20 months of elevage in ~20% new French oak, a few older French oak barrels, two seasoned Demi-muids, and a large foudre to preserve the aromatics.
This is Friday night steak wine as it should be!
