The Premier Cru of Nuits-Saint-Georges Les Vaucrains lies in the northern section of the Nuits-Saint-Georges appellation next to Vosne-Romanée. The 6.2ha vineyard is east and south east-facing, with its Pinot Noir vines planted on brown clay-limestone soil with elements of limestone scree and gravel.
Les Vaucrains is generally regarded as one of the great vineyards of Nuits, its wines often rivalling those of Les St Georges, above which it sits. The wines of Les Vaucrains are however more brooding and muscular in style (though certainly not lacking in elegance and finesse). These wines are best enjoyed afters a decade or more of bottle age.
After aging for 13 years this is entering its prime, the complex and layered deep red fruits have come alive while the tannins are falling off and tertiary flavors of forest floor, earth, and savory herbs are now coming on.
